Google Has Identity Problems!

Well not really ;) but you’d better pay attention if you have ID in your URL strings.

Two of our clients have noticed problems with Google SERPs this week.

The first problem we were told by Google was because of ID following directly after a “?” in a URL. We were told that if the following condition is true in the URL then the page would be removed from the index;

http://www.somesite.com/page.asp?ID=something

Allegedly this is for any with ID in the charset of the URL. so PageID or SiteID would also be removed from the index.

Where ID follows the question mark directly. If this is the case you’ll apparently be removed from the engine. Note it doesn’t happen (for arcane reasons we have yet to uncover) if you use ID after an “&”, so apparently this would work;

http://www.somesite.com/page.asp?my_variable&ID=something

Secondly a problem which has already been discussed on SEO rountable last week has reared it’s ugly head. One of our clients had problems getting his supplemental page results listed. Ahh the joys of working with search engines. Vital for conversion to be found for what you want to be found for, but sometimes hard to achieve!
