Functionalism; A new approach to dealing with web analytics? or not?

I was alerted to this white paper today and was impressed with Semphonics approach.

I am not sure whether the method is new, as there are many ways to classify pages based on their content or their place within a content management system and I have seen this kind of classification of pages before (all be it named differently). I am also a little dubious about this paragraph on page 12 of the document;

There is no doubt that tools could better embody Functional concepts and this would make analysis easier  but there is no reason to think that you will have to scrap your existing measurement solution.

I am not sure how easy this kind of system would work across different web analytics systems having used and seen the limitations of most of them.

However I am highly impressed with the scientific thought process behind classifying the site pages and developing KPI’s based around the purpose of the page. The white paper is definitely worth checking out.

Thanks for pointing out that interesting white paper. I agree it has a good systematically approach. You mentioned that you have tested many analytics systems, would it be possible to get your opinion on the ones you have worked with, a sort of guide if you will?
